Suddenly your machine bogs down right at that critical moment, you reach for your Louisville slugger to give your PC a piece of your mind but you pause. A further examination of your machine finds a new application running in the background tying up your precious resources.

The dreaded Dumprep.exe, what is Dumprep.exe? Well if you use Windows XP its a Microsoft tool called “Windows Error Dump Reporting”. Basically if some file crashes on your system Windows “phones home” via Dumprep.exe and sends a error report back to the mothership where it will deleted and never looked at. The funny thing is that the dumprep.exe isn’t the most reliable program ever and can make a already bad situation worse. So let’s get rid of the narky ET.

Disable Dumprep.exe on Windows XP:
1. Right click on “My Computer” choose “Properties” from that menu.
2. Click on “Advanced tab”.
3. Click the “Error Reporting” button.
4. Check the “Disable error reporting” box.

You may choose to uncheck the the box below it, “But notify me when an error occurs” if you want.

The Pirate Bay Trial Begins

We have all heard of the Pirate Bay, the bit torrent search engine site. It was sued by some biggies of the MPAA like MGM Pictures and Sony BMG, and the case began its trial yesterday in the Stockholm district court.

A police investigation took place way back in 2006 and the current trial is considered a consequence. The trial is being closely observed by the world because its judgment has the power to determine the future of the Internet regarding copyright infringement laws and rethink where cyber law stands.

The Pirate Bay is a Swedish site that facilitates users by providing links to torrents. It is considered the world’s largest bit torrent tracker and with an Alexa Rank of 109, I can now imagine how popular the site has become.

The Pirate Bay has millions of supporters and I am not one among them. I respect, encourage and support open source, but I have no delusions that those who take part in copyright infringement are being Robin Hood-ish. Music, movie, publishing and software industries are largely impacted by piracy and I can feel the pain when someone takes my content without my consent.

Without meaning to make it a Super Bowl match, on which side are you?

Research Downplays Personal Info Threat

NEW YORK - Almost every lesson on Internet safety warns against posting personal information such as phone numbers and school names. Researchers are now suggesting, though, that such advice, however well-intentioned, doesn't necessarily make children safer from predators and related threats.

In a recent study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, researchers found no evidence that sharing personal information increases the chances of online victimization, such as unwanted sexual solicitation and harassment.

Rather, victimization is more likely to result from other online behavior, such as talking about sex with people met online and intentionally embarrassing someone else on the Internet.
"For a long time, we really didn't know," said Michele Ybarra, one of the study's authors. "It made sense if you post or send information you increase your risk. It's also a very easy message: Don't post personal information and you'll be safe."

But Ybarra, who is president of the nonprofit Internet Solutions for Kids, warned that parents and educators must now reassess the lessons, saying resources may be wasted on tips that do not address the underlying problem.

Instead of discouraging children from communicating, she said, the better approach is to teach them about what at-risk behaviors to avoid and warning signs to spot.
"We now need to be a lot more specific and accurate in our message," she said.
The research, published in February, was based on telephone surveys of 1,500 Internet users ages 10 to 17.

In a separate study of 2,574 law-enforcement agencies, researchers found that online sex crimes rarely involve offenders lying about their ages or sexual motives. The 2004 study, published in Journal of Adolescent Health, said offenders generally aren't strangers, and pedophiles aren't luring unsuspecting children by pretending to be a peer.

"Most of these sexual-victimization (cases) happen at the hands of people they know, and a lot happen at the hands of peers," said Janis Wolak, co-author of both studies and a researcher with the University of New Hampshire's Crimes Against Children Research Center.
The research also found that online victims tend to be teens with troubles offline, such as poor relationships with parents, loneliness and depression.

"A lot of parents, I think, can breathe a big sigh of relief," said Anne Collier, editor of the online newsletter Net Family News. "If their kids are just socializing with their friends online, they are going to be fine."

Nancy Willard, author of "Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens," said predators don't need to be snatching kids by piecing together clues from personal information when they can go for the low-hanging fruit - the teens specifically engaging in at-risk behavior, such as posting sexually provocative images in their profiles.

Many Internet-safety experts remain skeptical that parents and educators can let their guard down on the posting of personal information at sites like Facebook and News Corp.'s MySpace.

"The only way they can get into trouble is if they end up meeting the stranger, and that's going to come from giving out personal information," said Susan Sachs, chief operating officer with the nonprofit Common Sense Media. "It's pretty clear to connect the dots between personal information and predators."

Monique Nelson, executive vice president of the Internet safety group Web Wise Kids, said kids "don't have the sense of ... knowing when a predator would be grooming them" so a blanket message against posting personal information is a good first line of defense.

Amanda Lenhart, a senior research specialist at the Pew Internet and American Life Project, agrees that the attention on personal information may be misplaced, but she said caution may still be wise.

"There is something to be said for preserving your privacy for other reasons," Lenhart said, noting that too much information could come to haunt teens when they apply for college or jobs. "Safety is not necessarily the No. 1 reason."

Problems with Google Blogger!

Over last weekend I finally did the move to the "new blogger" that Google now runs. So nice now to have all three on one dashboard, no more signing in and out of each to post on them. But, unlike the old blogger the new one (Googles) hasn't allowed Hipcast and maybe other programs to work in the new blogger. It was so easy to record a audio and or video in Hipcast and post right into ones blog. So nice where the old days, Google has had Blogger for a time now and still hasn't sent a certificate to Hipcast that ‘authenticates’ Hipcast as as a trusted source.

Hipcast works with a few of the popular blogging services and Typepad.com so far doesn't seem to have a issue with one posting from Hipcast. I still have nine months paid in my Hipcast account and want to stay with them but..... Blogger is and was great till I moved to the new Google Blogger. I'm hoping things get worked out and soon. I'm not looking forward to having to move to another blogging service, because I was very happy with Blogger until the move. Maybe Google ran into a problem but if so I haven't seen anything posted and still haven't gotten a reply from Googles tech support on the Google Blogger/Hipcast problem? I'm sure we are not a small group that enjoy the use of the two sites!

Or could the problem be with Hipcast.com?

VERY SERIOUS Windows Vulnerability

Ilfak Guilfanov, well known in "reverse engineering" circles for his wildly popular IDA Disassembler, needed a temporary patch for his own system due to the seriousness of the WMF vulnerability (see RED box below) . . . so he wrote one!

Download Ilfak's Temporary WMF Patch291 kb — for Windows 2000, XP, 64-bit XP and 2003 server This safely and "dynamically patches" the vulnerable function in Windows to neuter it and, after rebooting, renders any Windows 2000, XP, 64-bit XP and 2003 systems completely invulnerable to exploitation of the Windows Metafile vulnerability. Please Note: Unlike the "DLL unregister" recommendation offered by Microsoft (see RED box below) Ilfak's patch completely eliminates the vulnerability.

Therefore, until Microsoft is able to update and repair their vulnerable GDI32.DLL, this is what you should use. You do NOT need to unregister the DLL as described in the RED box below.

You SHOULD REMOVE THIS PATCH to restore full functionality to Windows Metafile processing once WIndows has been officially updated and repaired.

To Remove: Simply open the Windows Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs", where you will find the "Windows WMF Metafile Vulnerability HotFix" listed. Remove it, then reboot.

We are in the process of learning what we need to know and have to set up and upload a pod cast and vid cast. Right now we are testing and working with the editing of a vid cast. I think what will be the first of anything is a pod cast? All will come in time, as you can guess with a 50 plus an hour work week leaves little time for the show. Updates to follow as we move toward our first upload of episode 1.0!
